After a severe winter storm blasted parts of the United States earlier this week, temperatures continue to drop and many are still without power in several states from the Heartland to the Midwest. In response to the storm front that brought ice, snow, high winds, freezing rain and even some flooding to states from Texas to Maine, the American Red Cross has been busy opening shelters and distributing food to weary residents in affected areas.

Two years after a tsunami devastated the Sri Lankan coastline and forced thousands of people to resettle inland, many families have settled into new homes. This includes families who have moved to a brand new community in Walahanduwa near the southern city of Galle. While the people in this community are thankful for their new homes, conditions around the homes have deteriorated to the point that residents face a renewed threat of illness and disease.

Abu Bakar Cendol, born Dec. 26, 1960, had spent much of his life selling ice cream in and around the village of Punge Jurong, where he lived with his wife and five children. A well-respected village chief, Cendol was a model of leadership and success in this community of more than 4,000 people, but to many he is simply known as the “Ice Cream Man.”

After pummeling the Denver metropolitan area with a reported total of 25 inches of snow, the storm moved east affecting Texas, Kansas, Nebraska and Wyoming.

Having become the first hurricane of the 2006 Atlantic hurricane season over the weekend, Ernesto was downgraded to tropical storm status even as it battered the Dominican Republic, Haiti and Cuba. The storm system slowed and weakened as it made landfall yesterday, but forecasters warn that it could regain strength and its hurricane status as it heads for south Florida.

A commercial jet traveling from Lexington, Ky., to Atlanta crashed Sunday morning just a half mile from the end of a runway at Lexington’s Blue Grass Airport, killing 49 of the 50 passengers on board. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is investigating of the crash to determine the precise cause.
