Emergency Information System Program
(EIS)
The new EIS program being launched on June 6 will provide a valuable tool
for Huntington County residents in the event of a declared emergency. As an
result of this past Winter season, it was recognized that a formal means of
communication lacked in this area. Thru the efforts led by; Pat Horoho,
Brandon Taylor, Tiffany Baily and Mike Rohler, discussions were held on how
to correct this deficiency. It was decided to utilize the current 211
system, Tiffany, along with the Emergency Management Agency, Brandon, will
format information for distribution. With the American Red Cross Disaster
Response Plan implemented to provide shelter and communication information,
the plan was put into place.
In the event of a Declared Emergency Event , all information is
compiled at the center of operations, EOC, managed by the Huntington County
EMA. This concise information then would be forwarded to the operation
center of 211. The live operators will then be able to assist the
general public with information related to the areas of impact and the
people affected. By calling 211, emergency information; shelter
locations, road closures, evacuations, power outage areas affected, and
severe weather alert levels will be provided.
The Disaster Box Van was on site at this year's Balloon Fest. This event
was held at the Huntington Municipal Airport on June 20,2009. During this
event, volunteers provided; First Aid Services, bottled water and glow
sticks for sale.
At this year's Heritage Day Parade, volunteers and staff will be handing
out plastic bags with; EIS program material, CPR/First Aid Class schedules,
Pet First Aid material, and peppermint candy.
SUMMER 2010 NEWSLETTER
In the summer of 2010, the
American Red Cross participated and held events. These events include the
Clara Barton Golf Outing, Blood Drives, Classes, Heritage Days Parade, and
the Bucketshake. These are just the public events; this does not include
the assistance that is given to people who are victims of disasters and war,
and helping veterans meeting their appointments out of town.
Heritage Days Parade (June
19, 2010)- The first event for the summer was the Heritage Days
Festival. The American Red Cross was involved in the Heritage Days Parade.
The Red Cross had all three vehicles in the parade. The drivers of these
vehicles were Terry Kline, Connie Kline, and Dean Rittenhouse. The people
that walked in the parade included the Parker family, Kathy Scott, and Mike
Rohler.
Community Classes (July 6,
2010)- The second summer event was the all of the different classes. At
the beginning of the summer, the American Red Cross held classes for adult,
child, and infant CPR and First Aid; CPR and AED for the Professional
Rescuer; Babysitters training; and Dog First Aid and Cat First Aid. At the
end of the summer the classes concluded with offering all of the previous
mentioned classes along with First Aid only classes. For the people who
already have their certification, the American Red Cross offered review
classes for these people to get recertified.
Blood Drives (July 16,
2010) - The third summer event that the American Red Cross held was the
local blood drives. These blood drives were found in business in
Huntington, Warren, and Roanoke. The places that were kind enough to let
the blood mobile come there were Wal-mart in Huntington; SS Peter and Paul
Catholic Church/School in Huntington; Heritage Pointe in Warren; Evangelical
United Methodist Church in Huntington; S. Joseph Catholic Church in Roanoke;
the Knight-Bergman Center in Warren; Pathfinders Services in Huntington; and
Huntington University. The American Red Cross did hold a special blood
drive for a 2-year old boy who was in a tragic incident. This special blood
drive was held in August at the Huntington Salvation Army. In the near
future the American Red Cross is going to have the blood mobile visiting
Heritage Pointe in Warren; Markle Church of Christ in Markle; Evangelical
United Methodist Church in Huntington; and St. Joseph Catholic Church in
Roanoke.
Bucketshake (July 17,
2010) - The fourth summer event was the Bucketshake. The Bucketshake is
where volunteers stand on certain corners with a bucket to try to collect
money for the American Red Cross. This summer there were a total of 15
collectors. These people stood on the corners of Homes and Jefferson,
Jefferson and Etna, or Market and Cherry. The Bucketshake lasted 4 hours on
July 17, 2010. The volunteers that helped with this event were; Steven
Cadwallader, Kathy Scott, Larry Smith, Susan Zahn, Cathy Whitsell, Dean
Rittenhouse, Mike Rohler, Connie Kline, Mark Burnau, Scott Amburgey and son,
and the Parkers.
Clara Barton Golf Outing (August
14, 2010)- The fifth summer event was the Clara Barton Golf Outing.
This was held at LaFontaine Golf Course in Huntington. There were a total
of 15 teams. The teams were sponsored by several business and individuals.
The names of the 15 teams were Pathfinders/Kid Kampus, Bendix, Bippus Bank
(Roanoke), Bill Byerly, Country Post, First Federal, Gerdeau MacSteel, Jeff
Holzinger, Huntington Sheet Metal, Lawyers Title Insurance, Markle Bank,
Mignone Communications, Nelson Machine, UT Electronic Controls, and Dave
Wilson. The winner of the 2010 Clara Barton Golf Outing were:
Pathfinders/Kids Kamupus.
Huntington Chapter Office
(June 2010-present)- Within the American Red Cross, the volunteers are
able to send messages to the men and women that are in the armed forces
pertaining to family information. So far this summer, ten service members
have been notified about a family emergency. When a family emergency
occurs, a family member will call in and request that a message be sent to
the person in the service and will either request them to come home or to
just relay a message to them about what is going on. Also within the
American Red Cross office, the volunteers help veterans make doctors
appointments at the VA Hospital. The VA Hospitals that they are taken to
are in Marion, Indiana; Ft. Wayne, Indiana; and Indianapolis, Indiana. The
drivers that helps with this are Dale Flora; Sandra Fryer, Dale Gray, Jerry
Helms, Terry Kline, Connie Kline, Dale Rice, Ron Smart, Thais Wilhelm, and
Dean Rittenhouse. All of the workings done in the American Red Cross office
would not be possible without the women who work behind the scenes. These
women are Lynn Barkema, Betty Neuenschwander, and Donna Trout.
